Video Transmission Gateway and Video Storage Companion: Solving Video Transmission and Storage Challenges in Metro Systems

2025-07-21

As a critical component of public transportation safety, subway video surveillance systems are currently facing significant challenges in high-definition video transmission and long-term storage.

On one hand, the demand for real-time monitoring during train operations is becoming increasingly urgent to enable rapid response to emergencies. On the other hand, as the volume of video data continues to grow, retention requirements in some regions have been extended from 30 to 90 days to meet growing Public Safety needs — significantly increasing storage demands.

Traditional industry approaches typically involve increasing bandwidth and expanding storage capacity, but these methods are often costly and complex to implement.

Xingtu Xinke’s Video Transmission Gateway and Video Storage Companion offer a proven solution to the challenges of HD video transmission and long-term storage in subway systems.

From One to Ten: Real-Time 1080P Video Transmission for Faster Subway Emergency Response, Without Extra Bandwidth

In typical scenarios, a single 1080P video Stream requires 2–4 Mbps of bandwidth. However, in one city’s metro system, only 4 Mbps was available during train operations, making it impossible to transmit all 32 surveillance feeds to the control center in real time.

As a result, video data could only be uploaded in batches when trains reached terminal stations, leaving the control center without real-time visibility into passenger activity and causing delays in emergency response.

If traditional methods are used to expand bandwidth, significant changes to the network architecture would be required, resulting in much higher operational costs.

After deploying Xingtu Xinke’s Video Transmission Gateway , the metro system was able to achieve smooth, real-time transmission of multiple HD video streams — without modifying the existing network infrastructure. The gateway compresses live 1080P video data by 4 to 10 times, while maintaining near-original video quality.

By installing two 16-channel video transport gateways and applying 10x compression, the system effectively converts one video stream into ten — enabling the control center to access 32 real-time camera feeds within the same bandwidth. When paired with network-adaptive gateway devices, the solution ensures stable video transmission even under 20% packet loss, delivering clear, smooth, and uninterrupted video.

Extending Metro Surveillance Storage from 30 to 90 Days

A city’s urban rail transit system has deployed 2,350 HD cameras (1080P at 4Mbps) across 13 stations and one parking lot. Previously, the system supported approximately 30 days of video retention, which required around 8,700TB of storage space.

Meeting the new 90-day retention requirement with traditional storage methods would require a significant increase in hard drives — leading to higher costs and complex infrastructure upgrades.

After deploying Xingtu Xinke’s Video Storage Companion, the system was able to extend video retention from 30 to 90 days — without modifying the existing network architecture. The Video Storage Companion achieves 4–10x compression of HD video while preserving full resolution, frame rate, key video features, and playback duration.

With 6x compression applied to all 2,350 camera feeds, the system now requires just 1,450TB of storage for 90-day retention — saving 7,500TB and reducing storage costs by approximately 80%.

Xingtu Xinke’s Video Storage Companion and Transport Gateway are already deployed across industries such as education, energy, public safety, and finance — with proven success in real-world applications.
